Why Proper AC Setup Makes All the Difference
Installing an air conditioning system is one of the most important investments you will make for your Singapore home. In a city where daytime temperatures regularly hit 33 degrees Celsius and humidity hovers between 70% and 90% year-round, a well-installed aircon is not a luxury - it is a necessity. Done properly, your system will keep your family cool and comfortable for 8 to 12 years. Done poorly, you will face gas leaks, water dripping, poor cooling, and costly repairs within the first year.
Billy Aircon is a licensed aircon installation company in Singapore with over 18 years of hands-on experience. Since 2005, we have installed thousands of aircon systems across the island - from compact System 1 setups in studio apartments in Sengkang to full System 4 multi-split installations in five-room HDB flats in Jurong and executive condominiums in Tampines. Our BCA-registered TAI (Trained Air-con Unit Installer) technicians handle every aspect of the installation: copper piping, electrical wiring, trunking, drainage, and compressor mounting. Your new aircon works perfectly from day one.
Split System Types: System 1 to System 4
System 1 (Single Split)
One indoor unit connected to one outdoor compressor. Ideal for single bedrooms, studios, or individual rooms that need cooling. This is the most affordable option and is commonly chosen for rental properties or as a supplementary unit. Many homeowners in Toa Payoh and Queenstown choose System 1 setups when adding aircon to a single room during renovation.
System 2 (Dual Split)
Two indoor units connected to one outdoor compressor. Perfect for two-bedroom apartments or small HDB flats where you need to cool two rooms without installing separate compressors. A popular choice for three-room HDB flats across estates like Yishun and Woodlands.
System 3 (Triple Split)
Three indoor units sharing one compressor. The most popular choice for standard three-room and four-room HDB flats across Singapore. Cools the master bedroom, common bedroom, and living room efficiently. This is the system type we install most frequently in estates like Tampines, Clementi, and Bishan.
System 4 (Quad Split)
Four indoor units connected to a single compressor. Designed for larger homes - five-room HDB flats, executive apartments, and condominiums in areas like Bukit Timah and Novena. Provides whole-home cooling with just one outdoor unit. Also suitable for larger Punggol and Pasir Ris BTO developments with four or more rooms.
Replacement and Relocation
Already have an aircon system but need it replaced or moved? We handle complete system replacements (removing old units and installing new ones) as well as unit relocation during renovation. We can often reuse existing piping if it is in good condition, saving you money on the installation.
What Our Aircon Installation Covers
When you engage Billy Aircon for your installation, here is everything we take care of:
Free Pre-Installation Site Survey
Before we quote, one of our technicians visits your home to assess the installation requirements. We check room dimensions, ceiling height, piping routes (existing or new), compressor placement options, and electrical capacity. This ensures our quotation is accurate and there are no surprises on installation day. We conduct site surveys across all areas of Singapore, from Jurong in the west to Changi in the east.
Indoor Unit Mounting
Each indoor unit is securely mounted on the wall using heavy-duty brackets. We ensure proper positioning for optimal airflow - typically high on the wall with adequate clearance above, below, and to the sides. The mounting plate is levelled precisely to prevent water drainage issues.
Copper Piping and Insulation
We use quality copper pipes of the correct gauge and diameter for your system, paired with proper insulation to prevent condensation and maintain efficient refrigerant flow. Pipe joints are brazed (not flared, which can leak over time) for maximum reliability. This is especially important in Singapore’s high-humidity environment where condensation on poorly insulated pipes causes water damage.
Trunking Installation
Piping is concealed within PVC trunking for a neat, professional appearance. We plan the trunking route carefully to minimise visual impact while keeping piping runs as short as possible for optimal performance.
Electrical Wiring
We run the required electrical wiring from your distribution board to the indoor and outdoor units. Each system gets a dedicated circuit with the correct amperage circuit breaker for safety. All wiring is neatly routed and secured in compliance with Singapore’s electrical safety standards.
Condensate Drainage
Proper drainage is critical to prevent water leaking. We install the condensate pipe with the correct gradient to ensure smooth water flow from the indoor unit to the nearest drain point. Where gravity drainage is not possible, we install a condensate pump.
Vacuum and Pressure Testing
Before charging the system with refrigerant, we vacuum the piping to remove moisture and air, then pressure-test the entire system to ensure there are no leaks. This step is crucial - skipping it leads to poor cooling performance and premature compressor failure.
Compressor Installation
The outdoor compressor unit is mounted on your HDB aircon ledge, condo balcony, or designated area. We ensure proper vibration dampening, adequate clearance for airflow, and secure mounting. All refrigerant and electrical connections are made to manufacturer specifications.
BCA and NEA Compliance for Singapore Installations
BCA TAI Installer Requirement
In Singapore, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) requires all aircon installation work to be carried out by a Trained Air-con Unit Installer (TAI). This ensures installations are performed safely and to industry standards. Every Billy Aircon installer holds current TAI certification.
NEA R32 Refrigerant Mandate
Since October 2022, the National Environment Agency (NEA) mandates that all new residential air conditioning systems sold in Singapore must use R32 refrigerant. R32 has a lower global warming potential than the older R410A and is approximately 10% more energy-efficient. All new units we install comply with this regulation.
HDB vs Condo Installation Differences
HDB flats and condominiums have different requirements. HDB flats come with designated aircon ledges - you must use these for compressor placement unless you obtain special approval. The ledge size varies by flat type and determines the maximum compressor size. Condominiums typically provide balcony space or designated areas for outdoor units, but each management corporation (MCST) may have additional rules regarding placement, noise, and aesthetics. Our technicians are experienced with the requirements of both property types.
How to Choose the Right Aircon for Your Singapore Home
Room Size and BTU Capacity
The most important factor is matching cooling capacity (measured in BTU) to your room size:
| Room Size | Recommended BTU | Typical Room |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 15 sqm | 9,000 BTU | Small bedroom |
| 15-20 sqm | 12,000 BTU | Master bedroom |
| 20-35 sqm | 18,000 BTU | Living room |
| 35-50 sqm | 24,000 BTU | Large living area |
Singapore’s tropical climate means we typically recommend slightly higher BTU capacity than the baseline, especially for west-facing rooms that receive direct afternoon sun. Rooms on higher floors or with large windows also benefit from additional cooling capacity.
Inverter vs Non-Inverter
We strongly recommend inverter systems for Singapore homes. Inverter aircons adjust their compressor speed based on cooling demand, making them 30 to 50 percent more energy efficient than non-inverter models. Look for models with 5-tick NEA energy labels - they cost slightly more upfront but save significantly on electricity over the unit’s lifetime.
R32 vs R410A Refrigerant
Since the NEA mandate in October 2022, all new residential systems must use R32 refrigerant. R32 is more environmentally friendly with a lower global warming potential and requires less refrigerant charge, which translates to lower operating costs. If you are replacing an older R410A system, the new R32 unit will require compatible piping - our technicians will assess whether your existing piping can be adapted or needs replacement.
Brand Recommendations
Based on our 18 years of experience installing aircon across Singapore, here are the brands we recommend:
- Daikin - Excellent reliability, quiet operation, and energy efficiency. Their Smile and iSmile series are perfect for HDB flats.
- Mitsubishi Electric - The Starmex series is one of the best-selling systems in Singapore for good reason - outstanding build quality and cooling performance.
- LG - Their Dual Inverter range offers great value with low noise levels and smart features.
- Panasonic - Reliable and affordable, with good energy ratings across their range.
We do not push any particular brand. During our site survey, we will discuss your budget and preferences and recommend the best option for your specific situation. If you are living in an HDB flat, our detailed guide on how to choose the right aircon for your HDB covers everything from BTU sizing to brand comparisons for different flat types.
How Much Does Aircon Installation Cost?
Our installation pricing depends on the system type, piping length, and property specifics (2026 rates):

Common Shortcuts That Cause AC Problems
A surprising number of aircon problems we see during servicing can be traced back to poor installation. Here are common installation shortcuts that cause problems:
- Incorrect piping diameter - leads to poor cooling and high energy consumption
- Flared pipe joints instead of brazed - higher risk of refrigerant leaks
- Insufficient piping insulation - causes condensation and water dripping, especially severe in Singapore’s humidity
- Incorrect drainage gradient - results in water leaking from the unit
- Undersized circuit breaker - safety hazard and can cause the system to trip
- Poor compressor placement - reduces efficiency and increases noise levels
- Non-TAI certified installers - can result in unsafe installations that do not meet BCA standards
At Billy Aircon, we follow manufacturer specifications and industry best practices for every installation. It costs us more in time and materials to do it right, but it means your aircon will perform reliably for years without the headaches that come from shortcuts.
Maintaining Your New AC System
Once your new aircon is installed and running, regular maintenance is essential to keep it in top condition in Singapore’s demanding tropical climate:
-
Schedule your first chemical wash after 6 months. Even new units accumulate dust and begin to need cleaning within 6 months of use in Singapore’s environment.
-
Clean the filters every two weeks. This is the single most important thing you can do. Clogged filters reduce cooling efficiency and force the system to work harder.
-
Set a moderate temperature. 24 to 25 degrees Celsius is ideal. The NEA recommends 25 degrees for energy efficiency. Extremely low settings do not cool the room faster - they just make the compressor run longer, wasting energy.
-
Keep the compressor area clear. Ensure at least 30cm of clearance around the outdoor unit for proper airflow.
-
Listen for unusual sounds. A well-installed aircon should be virtually silent. If you hear rattling, clicking, or buzzing within the first few weeks, contact us immediately - it may indicate an installation issue covered by our warranty.
